We are making inroads here in Sydney, with Ryan Wood finishing P7 and Chaz Mostert charging through the field to P11, after starting from P22.
The day began with a chaotic qualifying session, as rain arrived just two minutes in and dramatically changed the track conditions. With the circuit drying late in the session, Chaz was unfortunately caught out after doing his fast lap early, it left him down the bottom of the time sheets, lining up on the grid P22.
Ryan snuck his way into the shootout after putting together a strong lap in Part 2 of qualifying, marking a significant milestone as the first Toyota GR Supra to reach a Top 10 Shootout. In challenging wet conditions, he put together a strong lap in the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing No. 2 to secure a strong second-row start in P4.
Race 2
A tough start off the line for Ryan saw him drop a few positions, with race starts being another big learning area with the new Toyota Supras.
Chaz made an immediate impact off the line, gaining six positions in the opening five laps as he pushed forward through the field with strong early pace.
A safety Car on lap 11 brought the entire field into pit lane, where the pit crew delivered incredible stops under pressure. The team recorded the second and third fastest pit stops of the race, seeing Car 2 jump up to P6 and Car 1 up to P13.
Both cars were consistent in the middle stint, maintaining positions, managing tyres well against the cars around them.
Ryan pitted with 20 laps remaining, committing to an early undercut strategy amongst the leaders, whilst Chaz extended his stint to come home in the closing stages of the race.
An impressive drive from Ryan saw him cross the line P7, doing a great job defending cars around him in the final laps.
Meanwhile, Chaz was one of the fastest cars on the track, continuing to charge forward, crossing the line P12 before being promoted to P11 following a post-race time penalty for Randle.
Overall, it was a really positive day for the team, we are making inroads and taking away valuable learnings after every session. With another race ahead tomorrow, we are focused on continuing to build on the momentum.
Chaz Mostert
“Today’s qualifying session didn’t show the pace we had in the car, we took a gamble to run early after the rain started but it wasn't the right decision, how good is hindsight.
“The crew did a mega job tuning the cars up overnight, today's package was a lot stronger than what we rolled out with at the beginning of the weekend and we don't take that for granted.
“We’ve got another big day tomorrow, there’s still plenty of learnings, we need to put our heads together tonight so we can attack even stronger tomorrow.”
Ryan Wood
“Today was pretty special, being a part of a milestone getting the Toyota Supra into the Top 10 Shootout was cool and to gain six positions on qualifying to start P4 for the race.
“As a whole, today was a very good day for us. We finished in the top 10 in the race and we were racing with the big dogs, still plenty of learning to come this weekend.
“All my race start practice over the Summer clearly hasn’t helped my starts, I really need to dig into that because the start put us on the back foot today.”
