WOW, what a race! Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood finish up their weekend in Sydney both in the top five, up a combined 25 positions from where they started.
The day didn’t start off the way we were hoping for, with both cars struggling for pace in qualifying, starting near the bottom of the time sheets with Chaz Mostert in P16 and Ryan Wood P18.
Race 3
It would be a tough 300km race, with temperatures in the mid 30’s, it would be not only a physical challenge but mental too.
A great start for both Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood off the line, a big focus area for Ryan today. The boys slotting in at P13 and P14, working together in the opening stint.
Opting for a shorter first stint, after getting caught in traffic early, Chaz dove into the lane for four tyres. It was another incredible pit stop from the crew who changed his tyres in 4.8 seconds, jumping Le Brocq in the lane.
Ryan was the last driver to pit in the opening stint, coming into the lane on lap 23, with some plastic debris on the track getting caught in the brake duct of the Mobil Truck Assist Racing No. 2 which the mechanics removed during the stop.
A safety car two laps later saw the whole field come into the lane to take their final stop of the race. Just as the cars went back out on track after taking slick tyres, the skies opened up and it started pouring down with rain.
Once the safety car came back into the lane, both Chaz and Ryan were like ducks to water and took control of the wet weather, in their element they both charged forward up to P6 and P8 effectively.
With the skies clearing up, the track started to dry and the boys kept it clean and continued to show strong speed up the front of the field.
On the final lap, Kostecki turned Cameron ahead, sustaining a 15 second penalty which saw Chaz and Ryan jump two positions, finishing up P4 and P5. An incredible result, not only for the team but Toyota as well, with all five Toyota GR Supra’s finishing up in the Top 10.
There’s plenty more learning to come, but a really encouraging upward trend over the weekend. The hard work doesn’t stop yet, we are back at work for a week before the Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Chaz Mostert
“That’s round 1 in the books for the Mobil 1 Optus GR Supra, man did this car look awesome out on track this weekend.
“Bit of a mixed bag of results for Car 1 this weekend, but the highlight was definitely that last race to go fourth and fifth with Woody, he sure was putting me through the paces towards the end of that race.
“I wanted to say a massive thank you to all of our supporters this weekend for coming across to the Toyota GR Supras with us, it’s really special to see how many of you are here this weekend. Hold tight, we will have some good results coming and we appreciate you coming along on the journey with us.”
Ryan Wood
“A great result in the end for our team, it’s been a really cool weekend taking the new Toyota GR Supra out on track.
“Finishing up P5 from P18 today, a really cool for both me and Chazzie to finish up the weekend in the top five from really deep in the field in a very chaotic race.
“I’ll be honest, it’s been a pretty up and down weekend, if you told me we would be walking away from the weekend P6 in the championship, I would have laughed at you.”
