It’s the Supercars Semi-Finals with Chaz Mostert in the hunt, currently sitting P4 in the standings.
It’s been another tight turnaround for the crew who have been hard at work repairing panels from the Gold Coast round.
Sandown was a strong weekend for the team last year and we will be looking to repeat those results again this year.
The Finals Explained
The seven remaining drivers in the Finals at Sandown have their championship points set to 4000 points. Championship standings from post-Gold Coast define the semi-final bonus points: 150 points for first, with a decreasing bonus of 120, 96, 78, 66, 57 down to 48 points for seventh. The highest point scorer will have 4150, then down to seventh on 4048 points.
Chaz Mostert points: 4078
If a driver wins either race at the Sandown round, they are automatically into the next Finals round at Adelaide.
After the two races at Sandown, the three Finals drivers with the lowest points in the championship (fifth, sixth, seventh after Sandown) are eliminated, unless those drivers have won a race at this event. In that case, the next driver with the lowest points in the championship would be eliminated, leaving four drivers in contention for the title at Adelaide.
Format
Friday: On track action kicks off with two 30-minute practice sessions.
Saturday: We head straight into a three-part qualifying session to start our Saturday, which is split below:
- Part 1: Sets the grid for P19 – P26
- Part 2: Sets the grid for P11 – P18
- Top 10 Shootout: Determines the top 10 positions for the race
Lights will go out for the first of two 250km races at 3:30pm AEDT.
Sunday: Following the exact same format as Saturday, there is a three-part qualifying sessions which is followed by the final 250km race at 3.30pm which decide which four drivers will make it to the Supercars Finals.
The Track
Built in the early 1960’s, it is one of the most historic circuits on the calendar, draped with history.
It’s a short lap, at 3.1kms, but filled with action in the 13-corners that wrap around the horse racing track in the middle. The best passing opportunity is into turn 1 and 10, the heavy braking zones.
Tyres
Similar to the Gold Coast 500, for Saturday’s 250km race we will be running the Dunlop Super-Soft tyre and the Dunlop Soft tyre for Sunday’s on track action.
Pitstops
There are two compulsory fuel stops throughout each 250km race. How much fuel you take, and when, will be the big question.
Weather
It’s looking like there is wet weather on the horizon, especially on Saturday, with forecasted 10mm of rain. Sunday appears to be dry but it’s Melbourne, you get four seasons in one day.
